New legislation requires that for all new homes (and those undergoing significant renovation) after May 2014, where there is a need for multiple smoke alarms, they must be interconnected such that if one smoke alarm activates, they all do. Please refer to the CFA Victoria.
In Victoria, both photoelectric and ionisation smoke alarm types are approved for use as household smoke alarms. The year the home was built affects what type of smoke alarm needs to be installed - any pre-1997 homes require only the 9v battery powered smoke alarm, whereas post-1997 (or majorly renovated) homes require the 240v type.
Smoke alarms must be installed outside all sleeping areas or bedrooms, and they’re also required to be installed near the staircase even if there are no bedrooms on that level. For specific installation guidelines please visit the CFA Victoria website for more details.
Yes you can - no formal qualifications are required for the inspection of the smoke alarms, however they do have to be maintained and installed in accordance with AS3786. It is important to study the location and the correct type of smoke alarms to install to suit the construction year of the property and its class. Adequate record keeping is also mandatory in accordance with the latest regulations.
Smoke alarm inspections must be conducted annually. If you engage CheckHero, we will automatically provide you with a reminder when the inspection is due. Alternatively, we recommend you set a calendar reminder.
